By jeep up the Kali Gandaki, the world’s deepest gorge, to the apple orchards of Marpha, the desert town of Jomsom, medieval Kagbeni and the sacred temple of Muktinath.

The trip starts and ends at your hotel in Pokhara.

A market town where the road enters the Kali Gandaki valley.

A village with natural hot springs by the Kali Gandaki.

A whitewashed Thakali village known for apples and apple brandy.

The windy district headquarters of Mustang, below Nilgiri.

An old fortified village at the gateway to Upper Mustang.

A temple sacred to Hindus and Buddhists at about 3,800 m.
The road from Pokhara to Muktinath follows the Kali Gandaki river between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, one of the deepest valleys on earth. In three days you pass from subtropical forest and hot springs to the dry, wind-swept landscapes of Lower Mustang.
On the way you see the waterfalls of Rupse, the Thakali villages of Kalopani and Marpha, and Jomsom, the district headquarters. Beyond lie Kagbeni, a medieval village at the gateway to Upper Mustang, and Muktinath, a temple sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists at about 3,800 metres.
We travel by private jeep with an experienced mountain driver. The road is rough in places and days are long, but the change of scenery is unforgettable.
Early start from Pokhara via Kusma and Beni into the Kali Gandaki valley. Stop at the Tatopani hot springs area and the Rupse waterfall, pass Ghasa and Kalopani between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, and visit Marpha before reaching Jomsom.
Drive to Kagbeni, a medieval village of mud-brick houses and an old monastery at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers. Continue up to Muktinath and visit the temple, its 108 water spouts and the flame shrine.
A long day back down the valley to Pokhara, with stops for lunch and photos along the way.
March–November. The upper valley is dry even in the monsoon, but landslides can close the lower road; winter brings cold and snow near Muktinath.
A mix of paved and rough sections; expect dust, bumps and long days.
An ACAP permit is required and included. Upper Mustang beyond Kagbeni needs a special restricted-area permit (not included).
Comfortable lodges in Jomsom and Muktinath with twin rooms.
Muktinath is about 3,800 m. Move slowly, drink water and tell your driver if you feel unwell.
Mobile signal in the main towns; Wi-Fi in most lodges.
Our drivers know the road well and travel only in suitable weather. After heavy rain or landslides we may change the plan for safety.
