Bandipur sits on a ridge at about 1,030 metres above the Prithvi Highway, halfway between Pokhara and Kathmandu. It grew rich on the India–Tibet trade and kept its Newar town houses, temples and car-free bazaar street when the highway passed it by.

We drive from Pokhara in about two and a half hours, spend the afternoon on foot in the old town and on the Tundikhel viewpoint, and stay the night. At dawn, walk up to the Thani Mai temple for sunrise along the Himalaya before driving back to Pokhara.
