Lumbini, in Nepal’s southern lowlands, is where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born. The Maya Devi Temple marks the spot, beside the sacred pond and the Ashoka Pillar erected in 249 BCE. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world.
